Latin American Fashion Awards debut in the Dominican Republic. Fashion industry figures from across Latin America and the global diaspora gathered at the inaugural edition of the three-day event, founded by Constanza Etro and Silvia Argüello, held on Nov. 2 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Winners included Mexican-American designer Willy Chavarria (Designer of the Year), Luar by Dominican-American designer Raul Lopez, UK-based Brazilian designer Karoline Vitto (Emerging Brand of the Year), Colombian textile brand Verdi (Artisanal Project of the Year), US-based Mexican designer Daniela Villegas Accessories Brand of the Year and Chile's Ecocitex and Mexico's Desserto (as co-winners of Responsible Project of the Year). "In terms of business, Latins in fashion are a major workforce within the [global| industry and carry as well the legacy and roots of their region. The ancestral crafts and responsible practices available in the region are also a key to a sustainable and regenerative transition in fashion. ICYMI, this past weekend marked the first-ever Latin American Fashion Awards, which honored Latin designers, models, and creatives revolutionizing the global fashion industry. But for Leslie Grace, the occasion was more than a celebration of artistic excellence—it was a homecoming.

The Dominican-American actress and singer co-hosted the ceremony at the Altos de Chavón Amphitheater in La Romana on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, which happens to be same city in which her parents met. “It’s always a source of pride for me to represent my people wherever I go, but even more so when it is in my country,” she tells ELLE.com. “I feel the warmth and affection of my people in a special way.”

For the first time ever, the Latin American fashion industry came together on 4 November to celebrate local and diasporic talent with a three-day celebration punctuated by an awards ceremony hosted in the Dominican Republic.

Winneres of 14 categories were announced on Saturday night at a ceremony in the Casa de Campo amphitheater. They included Luar by Raul Lopez for Band of the Year, Willy Chavarria for Designer of the Year; and Caroline Vitto for Emerging Designer of the Year. Latin American Fashion Awards Host Inaugural Celebration in the Dominican Republic

This past weekend the Latinx community cemented its foot in the fashion world with the first-ever Latin American Fashion Awards in the Dominican Republic on Saturday.

The awards recognized regional icons in 13 categories, with more than 25 countries participating. The event’s mission is to honor the region’s heritage, celebrate diversity and inclusion, and bolster the future of the most outstanding Latin American talents, helping to shape the fashion industry.

The event took place as multiple Latino designers have spoken up about building brands differently, to be more inclusive. At the WWD Apparel & Retail CEO Summit in October, Willy Chavarria said he’s been building his brand to “empower people.”

This weekend, some of the most influential names in fashion descended on Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic for the first-ever Latin American Fashion Awards. Hosted by Leslie Grace and Iván de Pineda, designers and brands were honored in categories such as Designer of the Year, Brand of the Year, and more.
