CAMILA FALQUEZ

Mexico & Colombia

Born in Mexico to Colombian parents and raised in Spain, Camila Falquez creates photographs that harness the traditions of fashion and portrait photography to honor a contemporary spectrum of social and gender diversity. Channeling the conventions of surrealism and a painterly color palette, she creates an empowering vision that ushers in the narratives of community, humanity, liberation, and visibility. Inspired by her artist mother and early visits to Europe’s art museums, Falquez’s portraits are as much painterly productions as they are photographic, or even performative – she paints her own sets, creates the props, employs bold-colored fabrics to lend these portraits an added layer of regality, and creates entire universes that come to life.

One of the most sought after photographers of her generation, Falquez’s commercial and editorial work has featured some of the most famous figures of our time and graced the covers of international magazines: Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Kamala Harris, Penelope Cruz, Lil Nas X, and so on. But it’s raising local community leaders and subjects often overlooked by mainstream arbiters of beauty to the status of global stars that is at the heart of her creative work. With her first major solo project Being, she took these images to the streets, displaying these photographs as broadsides on buildings throughout NYC’s Village, or in barbershop and store- front windows.

Each of these individuals in their own right, and especially when viewed as a collective, proposes a liberatory way of being and moving through the world. She had her first solo show called God That Walk Among Us at Hannah Traore Gallery in New York City in June 2023.
