The Latin American Fashion Awards Are Going Global

Both Argüello and Cavalli Etro noted that following the awards, it’s crucial to provide the winners room to grow and opportunities to leverage their newly formed industry connections and growing platforms. “We knew it was going to be a biennial project—a year of celebration and a year of business development—for our winners,” Argüello says. “If we were going to do it every year, then by the time you have your winners, you’re already working on the next rotation. We wanted that development year so we could really impact the careers of our designers.”

Thus in lieu of a 2024 awards ceremony, the founders are taking the awards on the road, returning to the birthplace of the entire idea. During Milan Fashion Week in September, the 2023 award winners will be featured in Fashion Hub Milano, an exhibit hosted by Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana. They are invited to showcase their collections to international buyers, press, and industry leaders at the White Show. Argüello and Cavalli Etro will also be hosting a cocktail party, in partnership with ELLE, to celebrate Latin American creatives.

Latin American Fashion Awards debut in the Dominican Republic. Fashion industry figures from across Latin America and the global diaspora gathered at the inaugural edition of the three-day event, founded by Constanza Etro and Silvia Argüello, held on Nov. 4 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Winners included Mexican-American designer Willy Chavarria (Designer of the Year), Luar by Dominican-American designer Raul Lopez, UK-based Brazilian designer Karoline Vitto (Emerging Brand of the Year), Colombian textile brand Verdi (Artisanal Project of the Year), US-based Mexican designer Daniela Villegas Accessories Brand of the Year and Chile's Ecocitex and Mexico's Desserto (as co-winners of Responsible Project of the Year).

This weekend, some of the most influential names in fashion descended on Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic for the first-ever Latin American Fashion Awards. Hosted by Leslie Grace and Iván de Pineda, designers and brands were honored in categories such as Designer of the Year, Brand of the Year, and more. The night concluded with a performance from the evening’s Icon of the Year, J Balvin.

The three-day event, founded by Constanza Etro and Silvia Agüello, kicked off with a welcome cocktail on Thursday, November 2. The jury, presided over by Haider Ackermann and comprised of ELLE editor-in-chief Nina Garcia; journalist Anna Dello Russo; stylist and i-D global fashion director Carlos Nazario; supermodel, actor, and activist Indya Moore; Fondazione Sozzani creative director Sara Sozzani Maino; and philanthropist, strategic Investor, and entrepreneur Carmen Busquets, among others, then deliberated a slew of categories on Friday, November 3.

The Latin American Fashion Awards, which honours the region's heritage and design talent, held its first-ever award ceremony in the Dominican Republic on November 6.

The event, founded by Latin American fashion legends Constanza Etro and Silvia Argüello, aims to celebrate diversity and inclusion, while placing a spotlight on Latin American talent, with brands and talent from countries, including Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Columbia, Dominican Republic, and Chile being honoured.

New York-based fashion designer Willy Chavarría, born to an Irish-American mother and a Mexican-American father, was crowned Designer of the Year.
